Music Making Software DUBturbo

DUBturb Makes Complex Beat Sequences With Garageband Ease

Quite honestly, when I first received this product to review I was a bit skeptical because I had never heard of it and my extensive background as a musician seems to get in the way of what I always desire in applications involving music.  But, I was pleasantly surprised, this application seemed to really have it all.  I was never left with the common feeling of ‘I wish it could do that’ that I get with so many music applications.  In this article I plan on discussing the main points and features of DUBturbo that will allow the average and the musically inclined to make beat sequences and patterns easily.

There are 3 Main components to DUBturbo which separate it from the rest of the other recording and beat sequencing softwares out there, and of course several little things that do as well, but I’ll discuss these 3 big things first.

The first main component of DUBturbo is the sequencer.  The sequencer is the all familar ProTools/GarageBand style screen which shows you the tracks and when they are playing or not playing.  It’s not too special, but what does set this apart is that it’s got 16 tracks.  A drum sequencer with 16 tracks is pretty uncommon because most have far fewer!  It’s not the unlimited that ProTools will give you, but will ProTools run on your netbook?  I don’t think so; DUBturbo will.  DUBturbo lays out all the tracks easily in the sequencer view, I tend to think of this as my home screen.

The next main component of DUBturbo is the drum machine.  It’s obvious that this was very well thought out.  Unlike GarageBand where you are forced into drum sequences, DUBturbo lets you create anyone you like, or modify one that already exists.  It’s limited to just 10 pads per track, but this allows you to ‘type’ in the rhythm by using your computer keyboard as the drum pad.  It converts your number pad into a drum set and you get to define each sound.  There couldn’t be a more customized way of doing this either.  You can choose either predefined drum ‘sets’ or make your own.  To enter rhythms, you can either use your mouse and click on which part of the beat you want sound to happen or type it in on your drum pad/keyboard.  This thing is awesome.

The other main component to DUBturbo is the 4 Octave Keyboard feature.  This is THE thing that sets DUBturbo apart from the competition.  You can insert melodic ideas, harmonic ideas, bass lines, anything with this.  Beats without bass are boring, repetitive and seriously lame.  But add a bass line, or some sort of harmonic or melodic interest and all of a sudden those repetitive beats seem to have some sort of flow and provide interest to your listeners.  DUBturbo also makes it easy as pie to use the keyboard feature.  By using your computer keyboard, you can put the notes in just like you were at a piano.  It’s so easy and simple to do, I wish that Sibelius or Finale notation software were this easy!  DUBturbo allows you to use up to 4 Octaves which is a big range.  To some that may seem limited, but if you separate your tracks it’s difficult to feel limited.

Here are the other things that are really cool about DUBturbo…

There are soooo many sounds you can play with.  If you’ve ever used GarageBand, there are a lot of different sounds and sequences you can use, but navigating them takes practice to learn and it’s not that easy, with DUBturbo, all the sounds are easy to navigate.  They pop up in the middle of the screen, not just at the bottom like in GarageBand.  You can do more with the sounds, you can even change the keys the sounds are in.  In GarageBand you are stuck to whatever key the sample is in, which may not be the key of your beat.  DUBturbo makes changing keys easy.

DUBturbo lets you upload your beats and sell them to other DUBturbo users.  That’s right, writing music is easy on DUBturbo and getting paid for those beats is just as easy!

DUBturbo outputs studio quality sounds so you don’t have to worry about loss of quality when you burn to CD.

Using DUBturbo is easy, even for the non-musical user.  It includes a video tutorial series to walk you through, step by step, on how to make simple beats all the way through advanced user features.  So learning the program couldn’t be easier!  These videos are even great for users familiar with similar style applications because it tells you shortcuts and secrets to make using the program easier.

Honestly, I haven’t seen an beat sequencing application as thoroughly put together as DUBturbo.  It really does have it all and it makes putting together beats from any genre easy and fun.

Ease of Use:  9/10

Quality of Application: 9/10

Features: 10/10

Overall Value: 9.5/10

This really is the cream of the crop application.

The Pleasure of Digitally Distributing Your Classical Music Compositions

I have composed contemporary classical music. What? You have also composed beautiful contemporary classical music? No, not rock or pop or country music. Contemporary, classical music. And it sits on your computer or on scrawny hand-written music pages neatly tucked in your drawer. Maybe it has been performed. Maybe you have recorded it. You may think that this is the end of the story. Music is only to be heard in a concert hall or private functions, never to be repeated or listened to again.

Well, think again. Have you thought of putting it on the web for others to hear? What? Contemporary classical music out on the web? Who in the world is looking for classical music using the web? Aren’t all such classical music-lovers diehard technophobes, usually older folk, maybe in big cities and only in western countries? Hold on there! Such stereotypes are simply unfair. How do you know, and why, oh why, take anything for granted?

Go ahead. Try it out. See if a new breed of music lovers can be honed to your wonderful creations. Now you can introduce your music to the world –yes, your classical music! It is not the pariah that you think it is. There can actually be a real audience and following for the exact sound that you have produced, the sound and musical message that certain segments of society are actually searching for. So why not try the digital route? What do you have to lose?

Okay, so you have thought about it. You decide to take up my challenge. After all, you have by now Googled my name – Shaunie Shammass – and have actually have seen the diversity of sites where my classical music can be seen and heard. And now you want to know how to actually put up your own music on the web, right? Well, it is actually easier than you think. The magic words are “digital distribution”. And the steps to take are really rather easy. Ready?

First, you need to have a recording of your work. Don’t have one? Get some friends together to play it, but you must make a professional or near-professional recording of the performance. Second, take it to a professional for digital mastering, unless you know how to do it yourself. The end-result is just so much better. Third, find a website that does digital distribution. You can search for the words “digital distribution” and several sites pop up immediately. Make sure that the site you choose reformats your audio files and that it distributes to major music sites such as iTunes, Rhapsody, Amazon, etc. Finally, follow the instructions on your chosen site. Check the previews of your music that they provide carefully before approving your tracks for final distribution.

Voila! Your music is now online for everyone to take note of. So, go ahead Google your name. And feel the pleasure that I have of digitally distributing your classical music online for all to hear!

My first musical performance was at age 3 – in front of an old age group at the community center, where I dutifully played a Yiddish tune that I was able to pick out with one finger on the piano. They loved it – I hated it. The old folks surrounded me after the concert, showering me with slobbered kisses and pinching my poor little cheeks. I have had stage fright ever since.

I nevertheless studied piano, going through the yearly exams of the Toronto Conservatory of Music for 10 years. And then I dropped music for other passions – linguistics, phonetics, the sounds and languages of people.

Fast forward. I meet my future husband, born in Shiraz Iran. He sings me Persian songs, and woos me with a stack full of Persian-style music that he has collected over the years on grainy cassettes. I fall in love with him, and this music.

Fast forward again. I’m now married, 2 kids, and teaching at a university. I look into taking university courses that lecturers can audit, and come across a composition class, but I am told that not everyone is accepted – I have to have something to show the professor. I have written a piano piece, classical but based on Persian songs, and show it to him. He allows me into the class. Andre Hajdu. A remarkable teacher, opening the door to a remarkable journey that I am still taking. Encouraging the nascent musicality that has lain dormant for so many years, and unleashing my creativity as only a true teacher can.

I am still trying to find my musical voice, entwining east and west, in the language of classical music. Only time will tell if I succeed.

Music and Lyric Composition – A Therapeutic Mind and Soul Exercise

Music has accompanied people throughout their lives for different reasons that melodic tunes take on a therapeutic effect in alleviating stress-related concerns or even for just letting loose. As people have their own artistic preference in music and lyrical composition, coming up with your own piece of music can be good psychological and emotional exercise for almost anyone.

Stories and points of view come from experiences, and your own learning is one way to pick up a great topic. Also, keeping in touch with your favorite artists can help you on a style you wish to follow. Building your own music can bring a sense of fulfillment for you get to document a point in your life or idea onto a music sheet you can share with your friends and family.

1. Point in your life: Experiences are one of the most common topics. Choosing a period where emotions were high can be very poetic when put into writing. Just remember to use metaphors; these phrases make crude thoughts less offensive and also hide your identity.

2. Certain person/inspiration: To write about a person you admire or had a good influence on you is another approach. If the idea comes straight from admiration, building the tune and words will somehow jive for positivity usually strikes a happy note in your emotions. Also, to build a song out of admiration can get you to influence others, which is very rewarding for you as a songwriter.

3. Political view: Letting out your oppositional thoughts over a certain topic or person in a community can be better expressed through music. With a more rhythmical approach, you’re your strong points will not come out offensive. Also through lyric writing, the creative flow can pacify your ill-mannered thoughts and somehow change your perception.

Plain melody: There are times when words are not needed to express your thoughts, and pure musical content can be very personal without people really noticing the intensity of the composition. This approach can be a good way for you to reveal your sentiments over something. With technology now, composing is much easier with computer-generated instruments; and setting up a mini gathering of your family and friends would be a good way for you to share a part of you; and to set the mood, having poster prints of your theme would add in entertaining your guests.

Taking care of yourself means clearing your thoughts of negativity, and getting into a new hobby such as composing your own tunes and lyrics is a fun and effective solution. You can also try to be more adventurous that putting up a mini show can be enlightening; and dressing up your venue with poster prints adds a nice touch. Lastly, your prints, if produced through online poster printing services, can help you in the design aspect of your concept or theme.

Astral Projection Trance and Binaural Beats

Astral Projection is a process by which our consciousness temporarily leaves the physical body and functions independently. People who say they experience Astral Projection often say that their spirit or astral body has left their physical body and moves in another dimension known as the spirit word or the astral plane. Don’t be trapped in three dimension perception. Remember that we are all having multidimensional experiences and that there no linear time.

The box is our reality, a virtual experience in linear time and emotion. Creation takes place outside of the box. When you think outside the box, your consciousness moves belong linear thinking. We experience in higher frequency of light and see belong the limitations of physical consciousness. Everyone can have this experience, it is not a special gift that only a few people have been blessed with.

Some people can Astral Project naturally, for others it would take some amount of time to practice before they can enter the state of full relaxation. For those who don’t have the luxury of time, modern sound technology has provided us with a rather shortcut. Most people fail because they can not tune their brain waves into the right frequency. The scientific community has been aware that certain frequencies are associated with certain states of mind. And they know how to artificially create these brainwave states.

The sound technology known as Binaural Beats is very effective in getting people into Astral Projection Trance suitable for successful Astral Projection. This technology works by altering sound between both ears and using a variety of frequencies. It was concluded that a specific combination of frequencies consistently caused a shift in consciousness.

Safe and effective binaural-beat process offers a wide variety of applications which include, but are not limited to: relaxation, meditation, enhanced creativity, intuition development, enriched learning, improved sleep, and the exploration of expanded mind-consciousness states.

With the entire world of knowledge just a few mouse-clicks away http://www.squidoo.com/astral-projection-with-binaural-beats, it has never been easier than it is right now to learn something new and unexpected every day.

Organic Music

The word “organic” is used quite a bit these days. We hear it in business as organic growth and now we hear it with regard to music recording and podcasting. The term “organic” has come to refer to something that is natural, authentic, and has core value. For example, the organic growth in business refers to true expansion in the central core of the company not inflated increases from outside venues or other sources.

According to the online urban dictionary, organic music is music that has a core sound and tone that is natural by use of acoustic instruments and vocals. This definition went on to elaborate about organic music resonating positive vibes or something to that effect. As musicians, the music industry cautions us to be “more organic.” However, in this digital age, recording music in a home studio on a PC via Audacity or Adobe Audition by its very definition is digital. The sound is stored in a system of ones and zeros. Musicians can record short segments and easily repeat these sections by copying and pasting multiple times. Drums can be manufactured on keyboards or can be made completely inside a computer by using software. Most indie musicians use electronic keyboards, drum machines, and software for instrumentation when recording. These resonating vibrations though, are merely recreations from a computer.

Indie musicians are branching out into selling their music to film and television (i.e. sync licensing or synchronization). This leads to wondering how modern indie recording musicians can obtain an organic music texture?

TROUBLE WITH QUANTIZATION

Quantizing is a digital software adjustment that can move beats to equal other beats.

So if a beat is slightly off, it can be snapped perfectly into place. The same can be used for vocals that are slightly flat or sharp by adjusting the pitch. Anyone doing their own recording and mixing has their own techniques for editing and layering tracks. However, something that I noticed early on with quantizing beats in my instruments was when listening back, some instrumental sounds were canceled out. The aural threshold of human hearing is limited, so by aligning every single instrument to an exact beat meant that the listener wasn’t hearing everything that was intended. This aural phenomenon means that only a few sounds can exist in the same space at the same time. I also noticed that if two instruments had similar timbres or tones, one of them might be canceled out aurally.

Maybe this organic music direction has a slightly different meaning? Maybe it means less perfect?

ORGANIC SYMPHONIC

Let’s compare this to a symphony orchestra or choir where you have multiple musicians playing together at the same time. The orchestra has a thick acoustic sound which fulfills the definition organic music. If all the musicians are playing at the same time how can we hear the various instruments? There are a few factors that make this possible. The musicians are playing at the same time, but no two people can place precisely note for note at the exact time like a computer can. This fraction of a millisecond difference when each musician puts their bow to the string can be multiplied by all the musicians playing. This produces a thickness to the sound texture of orchestras and choirs.

Another reason for being able to hear the various instruments is due to the timbre of the individual instruments or choir voices. No two violins or voices have the exact same tone or vibrato. This variance allows human hearing to differentiate between sounds.

An additional reason for variance is the use of multiple ranges of notes. Orchestras have first and second violins, violas, cellos, and multitude of other instruments playing different notes in different octaves.

The last reason is where the musicians reside in the linear plane of hearing. For example, violins are heard more to the left, cellos basses are heard more to the right, and woodwinds are more central. This is a result of where they are seated in the orchestra during a performance and where a listener would commonly hear them from the audience.

APPLYING THIS

Knowing this information can be vital in providing a more organic sound to recordings.

Instrumentation- If you are using more than one type of the same instruments like guitars from a keyboard or digital strings, try using completely two different textures. You can even adjust one to be more treble sounding than the other. If you are adding a digital woodwind or flute of some type, add in the vibrato. If you are using multiple instruments, use different octave ranges and divergent notes within the chord structure of the song.

Panning – Use the pan feature and place instruments left center, another center, another right center, etc. This allows the listener to hear the individual instruments. If you are a band but want to achieve a chamber orchestra sound, place the orchestra how you would hear them live– violins on the left, viola left center, cello/bass more to the right. Place these instruments more to the back by using reverb while placing your guitar, bass, and vocals more up front.

Quantizing – By all means, quantize your rhythm and drums and a few of the instruments. In other cases, play the instruments all the way through the song and allow for that millisecond variance, as if multiple musicians were playing at the same time.

Timbres – Add a real voice, real percussion, or real other instrument along with your recording. If you are using the digital ah’s in a song from a keyboard, get a real person to sing along with them. Adding in live actual sounds goes along way to making the recording more organic.

All the Way Through – I will use quantization to make drum tracks or basic percussion tracks and bass tracks. The rest I play live, all the way through. It is a challenge to do this and requires practice. The end result is that you can achieve a sound of multiple musicians even if you are recording by yourself.

“Music is a form of emotional communication, and when an instrument is played by a skilled performer, it can conduct that emotion from composer, through performer to listener. But when machines are allowed to have too much influence, then that emotional connection is broken. Yes, the notes, rhythms and timbres remain, but the subtleties that make music truly involving are lost. Non-organic music does often start with good DNA (to continue the analogy), but then it goes through the machine process and is liberally treated with pesticides (quantization) before being packaged and sold to the public.” Reference – Audio Masterclass

Significance Of Music History Explained

Learning history of any subject may seem dull and boring, but nevertheless it is very important for the students. The importance of music should be taught to kids from an early age, and this has been validated and supported by neurological analysis of children, who were exposed to music before the age of four. Music fathoms expression in most primordial forms. Children simply enjoy making peculiar noises and sounds. If while teaching history, they are taught how to make musical sounds, what produces good sounds and how to recognize a good sound, then the significance behind learning music could be adequately built up in them.

Music has the power to improve other subjects in school. A music class could act upon as an enhancement class. Apart from that, reading music really helps in familiarizing the students to letters, which in turn, helps them to build up a habit of reading. With every type of music such as baroque, romantic, classical etc. having their own local and historical characteristics, teaching music history throws up information regarding composers, lyricists, and singers from these genres.

With the electronic media making stamping its existence in every family, the students’ minds are often saturated with songs that even adults cannot interpret. Music history teaching often leads to learning songs with straightforward lyrics. There are several individuals who fail to appreciate the significance of teaching history of music to children. Worse still, they see no motive behind including music in a school curriculum.

However, majority of those possessing such an idea can’t deliberately understand living without music. Numerous administrators see music as some co-curricular activity, overlooking its critical ingredients. However, care needs to be taken to see that these classes don’t end up being long lectures with bored eyed students yawning. Make it pleasant with inter spread games and exciting quizzes.

Teaching Music History in Music Education classes needn’t be always boring. It can be made very exciting and fun. To know more about how to teach music history in a simple and interesting manner, Click Here.

Why Music While Meditating Helps

There are many reasons why music while meditating helps people relax and meditate completely.

First of all, while you do not have to have meditation music, it can help if you have something soothing going on. Many people have found that the music begins to set them into meditation mode because they use the same music all the time, hence, allowing them to relax sooner.

Also, as much as we would like a completely silent area to meditate, exterior sounds often come through. This means that your subconscious is actually checking in on those sounds to check for danger, or an alert signal. By adding music you can actually reduce your subconscious mind’s worry over extraneous sounds.

Other people start the music early, because it allows them to sit down and actually meditate. While they finish up chores around the house, or other duties, there body is starting to recognize that it’s time to meditate and they find that they actually get the medidation done.

Other people feel that music during meditation is the wrong thing to do. If you’re curious whether it will help your meditation, you’ll have to try a variety of different types of music and sounds. Many types of music are available for download on the Internet, this can allow you a variety until you find the music that works for you, or find out if it actually hinders you.

If your curious as to whether your particular form of meditation can use music as a tool, try it and see if it helps. Then you may need to speak to your meditation supervisor. Often, they may have helpful hints as to what type of music or sounds you should use, or be able to explain to you why you shouldn’t use music at all.

Music Computational Engine

Music Computational Engine

In my last article “What is computational Music?” I explained in plain words what is computational music and what will be expected from a software that generates computational music based on Indian Music Computational theory. This article is giving a simple introduction on how to generate computational tones for fun and learning power of computational music engines or software.

Step 1: Go to site called tones.wolfram.com/generate/

Step 2: Make sure to have Quick Time Plug-in installed on your browser.

Step 3: Make sure your computer can play sound i.e MIDI Data.

Step 4: Make sure you have latest version of standard browsers and Javascript enabled.

Step 5: tones.wolfram.com cannot work without Internet connection make sure it works, however it can work without broadband connection.

Step 6 : Now, Look at the compositional controls on the web page, to develop your tone you must have knowledge of following before you really begin developing your own composed tone:

1. Musical Scale

2. Music Pitch Levels

3. Time Based : Tempo

4. Time Based : Duration

5. Music Instruments

Step 7 : Once you have acquired knowledge of concepts mentioned in step 6 to certain degree you can start experimenting to generate computational tones.

Step 8: Assuming that you have some degree of knowledge of music genre, we can select “new composition button”

Step 9 : Select the Style or music genre.

Step 10 : You may select “Show Variations” of the music style you have selected. It shows images for five compositions derived by making increasing changes to the Seed and Rule used to generate them.

Step 11 : One by one select the Instruments, Scale, Tempo, etc.

Step 12 : If you are done, now play or download your tone.

Categories of Music Gear

Categories of music gear encompass under them a wide range of musical instruments and equipment. There are a lot of categories and sub categories of music gear. They can be classified based upon the usage or based upon the mechanisms.

The two main categories that they can be classified into are acoustic and electronic. The gears that do not need any external electrical help are called acoustic music gears. Any acoustic instrument is a part of this category. The gears that are electricity supported are called electrical music gears.

Acoustic music gear

This category of music gear includes mostly the instruments and equipment in their original versions. Acoustic music gear do not need any external electrical help. Very good instances of this category of music gear are acoustic guitar, acoustic drums, violin, flute or any other acoustic instrument.

But the most interesting factor about acoustic music gear is that some of them can be used as electronic gear. You can take acoustic guitar for instance. If you add a pick up with the acoustic guitar, then it can be played electrically. Then the sound of this guitar can be deviated into the amplifiers. That means the sound will be heard from the amplifier.

But do not think that by adding a pick up you can use the acoustic guitar just like an electric guitar. That is not possible. Pick-ups just pave the way to the amplification of the sound. It cannot change the tone or the effect. Do not mix up acoustic guitar with the electric guitar. Though both of them are guitars and their playing style is the same, that does not mean that they are the same. They are widely different in many aspects.

Electronic music gear

This is one of the most important categories of music gear. Electronic music gear is totally different from the acoustic ones. This category of gear cannot be used without electricity. Electric guitar, synthesizer, and octopad fall in this category. Apart from them there are other kinds of electronic gear also. There are microphones, amplifiers, processors and pedals.

Though some of the acoustic instruments can be played electrically, no electrical instrument can be played acoustically. Electric connection is necessary for all of them.

The most important accessories of any musical instrument are amplifiers and microphones. The amplifier and microphone are almost the same. They enhance the sound of the instrument and vocal. The microphone collects the sound and carries it to the audience. But the amplifier just spreads the sound. They cannot collect them. To collect, you need a microphone.

While talking about electronic music gear, one cannot forget to mention the processor. The processor is a tiny gadget that consists of a whole lot of brilliant effects and tones. If you connect your guitar with this gadget, then you will be able to use all these tones and effects. There are some good quality processors available these days that provide you some more facilities like mixing two of the existing tones and making a new tone of your own.
