Autodesk 3ds Max is erstwhile known as the 3D studio Max, which is a computer graphic and animation software. Being fully licensed and commercial software, this is designed and manufactured by Auto Desk Media and Entertainers. 3D Studio Max is used to design and implement graphic features, shades, creation of normal maps, particle recognition and other forms of animations. With these features, 3D Studio Max finds a wide range of applications in films, video games, animations and commercial studios. Films like Black Hawk Down, 2012, Avatar used 3D Studio Max software for animations and graphic scenes.
Initially, 3D Studio was developed on DOS based platform. Later versions saw it getting upgraded to Microsoft platforms as well. The first manufacturers were the Yost group which was then published by Autodesk itself. After changing it to windows compatible, the product, known then as 3D Studio, was changed to 3D Studio MAX. This too was developed by the Yost group. Later on, Autodesk took charge and made drastic changes to the internal designs. It was released again this time with the name 3ds max. The following version was with the Autodesk logo, named 3dsMax. Currently, the latest version is known as Autodesk 3ds Max. Some of the primary features of 3D Studio Max are listed below.
Scene Exploring: This feature lets us get the higher view of moving image data and thus helps in its analysis. This feature has been included in this 3d modeling software in 2008.
Character Studio: character studio is the feature responsible for all kinds of animations of virtual characters or objects. In general, we see the virtual characters doing lot of things in films, which is possible with the character studio. Both the primary and secondary movements of the virtual characters are taken care by character studio. Since the images are in 3-d, this can be used as a 3d modeling software.
Skinning: the animated characters or the objects we see have a lower layer of skeletal structure. These skeletal structures are covered with different virtual skin tans depending on the type of the character. 3D Studio Max can apply different skinning to different skeletal structures.
Modeling: There are three basic types of model lings in 3D Studio Max. They are:
“Polygon Modeling.
“Non uniform, rational B-spline modeling.
“Surface tool path object.
Polygon modeling is best suited for game designing. Each object is treated as an individual polygon. Adding and editing features and details to this polygon like structures is quite easier. The rational B-spline modeling is an alternative to polygon method. It replaces the polygons with flat surface to eliminate sharp edges of the polygon. The surface tool is an additional plug in included in the third version of 3D Studio Max. With different modeling styles, 3D Studio Max can be used as an efficient photo edit software as well.
